Learning materials for the car theory test – Swiss providers compared

Seven official asa licensees, one market overview. As of: May 2026.

Transparency notice

This comparison was produced by Walter Systems AG, the provider of the learning programme e.driver. e.driver is one of the products compared here. All information about every provider (including e.driver) is based exclusively on publicly available information from the official manufacturer websites. Where statements could not be directly verified, this is indicated accordingly. Readers are invited to check the information themselves.

1. Background

The Association of Road Traffic Offices (asa) makes the official theory questions for the Swiss driving test available to the market under a licensing agreement. The asa does not publish a learning product itself; instead, licensed providers bring learning software, apps, books and other learning materials to market. The asa overview page lists all official providers – these form the basis of this comparison.

Important: licensees have at most around two-thirds of the current theory questions (officially approx. 66 %). asa updates are implemented in the learning products with a certain delay. According to the asa, anyone who understands the material rather than memorising it is well prepared regardless of the provider chosen.

2. Methodology

For every provider linked on the asa website, the official websites were consulted and the following aspects were recorded: media offered (app, web, book, CD-ROM, USB, download, flashcards), supported languages, driving licence categories covered, indicative prices (as of 2026/27 or 2025), special features and differentiators. All prices are given in Swiss francs (CHF). Comparability is limited because providers offer different licensing and bundle models.

In the overview, detail and price tables (chapters 3, 4, 5, 6) the providers are sorted alphabetically by manufacturer name. This order does not represent a ranking or evaluation. Chapter 7 (recommendations) follows a thematic structure by learner profile.

3. Overview of providers (cat. A1, A, B)

7. Recommendations by learner type

Since all the providers listed are official asa licensees, the quality of the original questions is comparable. Differences arise mainly from learning method, multimedia, price and personal learning style. The following profiles are structured by content; several providers may fit depending on the individual situation.

Understanding-oriented learners with an audio need

Profile: Want to understand content rather than memorise it; commute, like to listen on the go, appreciate forum exchange and live webinars.

Recommendation: e.driver (Walter Systems) – annotated additional questions, eBook + 12 audio MP3 lessons, online forum, free right-of-way rules webinars (CHF 29 for 1 year).

Young, smartphone-savvy learners

Recommendation: Fahrlehrer24.ch – CHF 18 one-off without time limit; no subscription, no expiry date.

Learners needing security or time

Profile: Want security regarding the investment or need more preparation time than usual.

Recommendation: e.driver offers a success guarantee (refund if you fail despite 90 % learning success) as well as a free extension of up to 2 additional years.

8. Conclusion

The Swiss market for theory-test learning materials is well developed and all seven official asa licensees offer products of valid quality. The key choice lies less in content quality – the questions come from the same source – than in the preferred learning form and the budget.

The most important note from the asa applies regardless of provider: licensees each have only around two-thirds of the current exam questions. Anyone who understands the material rather than memorising it is optimally prepared in any case.
